Building a healthy body isn’t about finding a single, perfect-for-everybody workout that some clever trainer has been keeping to themselves for years. It’s about building simple habits that are easy to follow, feel good, and do good things for your body.
If you’re new to exercise—or maybe picking it up after some time off—keep it simple.
Don’t worry about how many sets or reps of which exercise you should be doing to tone which part of your body. Don’t geek out on what percentage of time your heart rate is in the optimal zone for meeting your health goals. Don’t overwhelm yourself with fitness article after fitness article featuring the “best” or “top-secret” trainer workout.
Put on some comfortable, supportive shoes and take a walk around the block.
If you walk around the block every day for a few weeks, it’ll become a habit. It’s a chance to listen to your favorite music or podcasts, think through your plans for the day, de-stress, or snag a little “me” time. If you have a friend you’ve been wanting to catch up with, invite them over and walk together—or catch up on a phone call while you walk. Have a dog? They’ll be over the moon if you take them along—even if you have a backyard.
Over time, you’ll notice that walk getting easier. Your body will feel good. And, you’ll enjoy the peaceful feeling of having a little time to yourself.
We’re not hating on workout articles. Hey, we even have a few of our own!
If you’re looking for the number one healthiest type of exercise you can do, it’s walking. It’s free (as long as you already own shoes and clothes, which we bet you do). You can do it almost anywhere. You can totally multitask by making phone calls or listening to podcasts while you do it. And it does amazing things for your body.1
