Why Activated Charcoal is Beauty’s Next Big Thing

As far as beauty trends go, activated charcoal may seem like an odd one.
Normally associated with summer BBQs, charcoal isn’t typically something we think of when we want to go glam. Fear not, we aren’t referring to anything used to cook food!
Rather, we’re talking about food-grade, activated charcoal powder. And it just so happens to be the Next Big Thing in many contemporary scrubs, body bars, masks, and cleansers.
Not sure why? Here’s the lowdown.
First Things First
Before diving into the beauty benefits of activated charcoal, we should let you know.
Charcoal is, first and foremost, a medicinal ingredient. Specifically, it can be used to combat a poisoning or drug overdose.1
The reason it works so well for medical purposes also happens to be why it’s effective in beauty products. Allow us to explain.
The ‘activated’ part of the equation simply means that charcoal was exposed to high temperatures; combined with a gas or other activating substance, it then expands its surface area. Drugs and toxins can bind to activated charcoal. Through this binding process, it helps the body rid itself of unwanted substances.2
As a Beauty Product
In an average day, the typical woman uses twelve products with a staggering 168 different ingredients.3 The result of all these chemical additives is not healthy for our skin.
Activated charcoal, on the other hand, doesn’t add to the body’s chemical overload, as it is an all-natural product.
When you’re ready to try something new and don’t want the yuck factor associated with chemicals, try activated charcoal. It is all-natural and all-good.
